INTRODUCTION
This on-line self-assessment is focused on Strategy Formulation, a critical exercise that develops a shared clarity around a common purpose, provides an understanding of how people can contribute to its success, and motivates them towards achieving it.
Excellent leaders create conditions for success, establishing a shared sense of purpose and vision throughout their organisation. The development and communication of a strategy is the key mechanism to achieve this, aligning behaviours and guiding decision-making.
A strategy then is a shared belief in and an active commitment to a compelling picture of the future, it's not just a document called 'Strategy'!
The extent of information and knowledge required to create a strategic context is situation specific. Enterprise wide strategies require extensive research and data analysis whereas at the other extreme, an individual or team strategy may require significantly less formal data collection. Nevertheless all require the same areas of knowledge to be addressed. In answering the self-assessment questions, bear in mind what level of formal knowledge is appropriate to your situation.
This self-assessment is based on one of our maturity assessment tools called PITSTOP that experienced consultants use with clients to asses the clarity of the strategic context in which all work takes place. It has been developed using principles and practices drawn from best-practice organisations and has been tried and tested over time.
